Nasty Girlhood

Nasty Girlhood is a photoshoot conceptualized by Misty Shipman, Hara Allison, and Cassandra Carpenter, bringing together women and femmes from the Spokane area to explore personal visions of girlhood. Shot at Dream Studio with additional photography by Crystal Perry-Via, the images celebrate the power in our contradictions: soft and hard, dreamy and discontented, mad and melancholy.

  • Cecelia, inspired by Grace Jones, fuses androgyny with femme glamour. Her bold colors and poses reflect creative freedom and the power of embracing all facets of identity.
  • Jessica explores duality with a composed body and a face ablaze in expression. Her shoot reveals the tension between the acceptable facade and the untamed self waiting to break through.
  • Donell is an Indigenous writer, counselor, and activist. Her shoot channels matriarchal power and resistance. “Our rights are being taken every day,” she says. “Empowerment through matriarchy rises to restore balance.” Her presence is a declaration. Native people are not only of the past. We. Are. Here.
  • Janae, joyful and radiant, lights up each frame. A roller-skating sunbeam, she reminds us that joy is strength, and that light, no matter how soft, can cut through darkness.
  • Sophia captures girlhood’s shifting forms, contrasting high-femme glamour with emotional rawness. In her, softness and hardness coexist. Both are feminine. Both are beautiful.
  • Trellanee, a latte artist, brings visual joy to everyday moments. Her photos reflect her dreamy, artistic spirit and embody Frida Kahlo’s words: “I dream of painting, and then I paint my dreams.”
  • Kiki, once a Princess Tiana performer en route to Disney World, survived a devastating car accident. Her photos mark her creative return months after a broken neck and spine. Like Tiana, she is still chasing her dreams. This is just the beginning.
  • Mary, a renaissance fair performer and historian, challenges falsehoods about Anne Boleyn through a joyful reimagining. Her second persona, Queen Silvermoon, shows that femininity can be fierce and fanciful. Delicacy does not mean weakness.
  • Dominique, a celebrated actress, director, and community organizer, channels Stevie Nicks in her shoot. She brings spiritual grace, fluidity, and expressive joy to every movement.
  • Miya celebrates embodied power and sensuality, fierce and unapologetic. Her photos echo her words: “This is the only body we get,” honoring the body with pride and defiance.
  • Cassandra reimagines the Virgin Mary, not as a divine symbol of unreachable purity, but as a complex young girl flattened by idealization. Her look challenges the myth of immaculate womanhood.
  • Hayden embodies a punk-inspired fallen angel, bitter and venomous beneath the pout. Her concept resists binary roles. She is neither saint nor sinner, but something more dangerous: aware.
